FRANKENSTIEN
Frankenstein is my favorite book. Reenacting the classic Karloff film was my first attempt at making my own movies on VHS in the 1980s. This page includes a 60 second distillation of the two times I attempted that, as well as podcast appearances, and other opportunities I've had to opine on my love for Mary Shelley's immortal novel and the cinematic adaptations thereof.
As featured on Episode 55 of Long Walk Short Drink, "Dave Digs" the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley's manuscript of FRANKENSTEIN, as published this year by SP Books. In this un-boxing video, I unpack number 328 of the Deluxe Navy blue hardback edition of 1,000 hand-numbered copies. In addition to reviewing this volume, I also compare it to THE ORIGINAL FRANKENSTEIN (Vintage Classics, paperback) as edited by Charles E. Robinson, which transcribes the manuscript and presents it with and without her partner Percy Shelley's amendments and contributions. There is also a quick perusal of THE NEW ANNOTATED FRANKENSTEIN (Norton, hardcover), which boasts "nearly 1,000 notes that provide information and historical context on every aspect of Frankenstein and of Mary Shelley’s life."

The above video collects excerpts of me geeking out on FRANKENSTEIN in honor of its 200th anniversary in 2018 on my old podcast, Long Walk Short Drink. LWSD was a long-form conversational podcast in which longtime pals Palmer & I talked circles around life, movies, and pop culture—past and present. Over the course five-year run (2017-2021), we also began incorporating a recurring "cast" of friends from time to time. Fans of Stephen King, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Star Wars, Mad Max, Kevin Smith, Bruce Lee, Audiobooks, film & TV shows, Pinball, and nostalgia from the 80s & 90s will find much to love. This is a 1-minute condensation of my 9-year-old “remakes” of James Whale’s FRANKENSTEIN. I started out drawing the films and coloring my illustrations with crayons and markers. Once a VHS camera entered the picture in 1987, it was all monsters all the time. In 87/88, my parents followed me and my 4-year-old brother around as we re-enacted FRANKENSTEIN and DR. JEKYLL & MR. HYDE (both two separate times!) —plus a quasi-original attempt at I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF. Yep… I was pretty cool.
