This event is the public capstone for my SEMAC Advancing Artist Grant, which supports the film’s sound design and mix. This activity is made possible in part by a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council, with funds from the McKnight Foundation. It will feature a freshly mixed cut of the film, followed by a facilitated conversation about how sound design shapes mood, narrative, and emotional impact in documentary storytelling.
🎬 WHAT: A free work-in-progress screening of my personal documentary The Furious Light.
Following the screening, FY2025 SEMAC Emerging Artist Grant recipient Nat Wilson will moderate a conversation with sound designer Kent Militzer and me about the role of sound in shaping the film’s narrative experience.
🗓 WHEN: Thursday, August 13, 2026 Doors at 6:00pm / Screening at 6:30pm / Discussion to follow 📍WHERE: Northfield Arts Guild Theater 411 W Third St. Northfield, MN 55057 🎟 ADMISSION:
Free admission. All are welcome, though the film does contain adult language.
🎬 ABOUT THE FILM
The Furious Light (88 minutes) Grappling with the gap between artistic longing and lived reality, a once-rising local singer-songwriter excavates his past in search of a reason to keep singing.
Built from 35 years of archival footage, performances, journals, and interviews, The Furious Light follows filmmaker and musician David Ullman back to his childhood home in rural Ohio, where he interviews his father, uncle, and brother about the dreams, disappointments, and shared history that shaped them. Together, the Ullman Boys reconsider success, belonging, and creative fulfillment.
I’d love to see you there—and please invite and/or bring anyone you know who you think might be interested.
Thanks, David
PS: This screening is not a public premiere. It is an invitation into the creative process while the film is still being made. Audience members will be invited to reflect on their experience, ask questions, and submit feedback that will inform the film’s continued development.
