This oral history of my Uncle Jack was captured on July 31, 2022, in my brother Brian’s home studio for a still-in-progress documentary. After he died in April, I decided to publish this long-form edit of what turned out to be our final interaction because Jack liked the idea that this heartfelt and good-humored interview could give some insight to anyone who might one day ask, “What didn’t I know about him?” We talked for about three hours on camera, Jack sharing openly about not just the musical background that’s the focus of the documentary I’ve been working on, but also his high school experience, time in the Air Force, the difficulties of transitioning out of the military during the Vietnam era, as well as his days as a drum corps instructor in Akron, and more.
